The official day of Human Relations Day Sunday 2022 is January 16, 2022. All are encouraged to celebrate this Sunday on any Sunday throughout the year.

Human Relations Day (Sunday before the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday) is one of six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings of The United Methodist Church. This day calls United Methodists to recognize the right of all God’s children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with one another. The special offering benefits neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services and work with at-risk teens through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program.

Last year, two grants totaling $20,000 generated from the Human Relations Day offering were given to four United Methodist churches in struggling Louisville neighborhoods to provide food, education assistance and psychological counseling to at-risk children. “People will see that we aren’t just a Sunday morning thing, that we are the hands and feet of Jesus,” said Dr. Tina Patterson, pastor at Mosaic, a multiethnic church located in a diverse neighborhood in southern Louisville.

Across the United Methodist connection we come together to help bridge the gap between church and community by participating in an offering set aside for Human Relations Day. For more than half a century, United Methodists have observed this churchwide special Sunday in recognition of the message Jesus demonstrated during his life: all of God’s children are important.

One of the wonderful aspects of The United Methodist Church is that we can do so much more together than we ever could do on our own. In recognizing Human Relations Day, we are called to make an impact in communities where people struggle because they don’t have the tools or resources to reach their God-given potential.
