2023 marks the 30-year anniversary of the red AIDS ribbons on the tower of the Hollywood United Methodist Church, a progressive congregation in the heart of Hollywood. In 1993, when the LGBTQ community was being excluded from houses of worship, this congregation proclaimed that all are welcome here by affixing two red ribbons of love to the sides of the tower. But that was just the outer face of our compassion and mercy. Inside the walls was where the hope was truly found – including making Quilt panels for congregation members.

Hollywood United Methodist Church is partnering with the National AIDS Memorial to display 9 panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt (the Quilt) to the public as part of its commemoration of the 30 Years of Red Ribbons of Love on its tower.

The Quilt panels will be on display at the church at Highland and Franklin on the weekends of April 22-23 and April 29-30 (12 pm – 4 pm PT). The display will be free to the public and feature 9 panels of the Quilt that reflect members and friends of the church who died from AIDS. The room where actual quilt panels was sewn will also be open to the public for viewing.

The Quilt is the largest community arts project in the world. Its first panels were created 35 years ago during the darkest days of the pandemic and today, consists of 50,000 individually-sewn panels with the names of more than 110,000 people who have died of AIDS.
