The following has been adapted from a remembrance shared at the memorial service for Mr. Pineda on October 5, 2024. Written by and photos provided by Rev. Garth Gilliam, North District Superintendent.
Al and I had offices right next to each other at the Conference Center over 23 years ago. He was a wonderful man and faithful saint. My first impression of Al Pineda when I joined the Connectional Ministry staff was this was a man that evoked a deep sense of respect. Al wasn’t the loudest or most vocal on our staff, but when he did speak, it was the quiet wisdom, experience, and authority that we needed to hear. I never remember Al being angry, overbearing, or demanding, but he had a gentle persuasion and leadership style that was effective and comforting.
So, I must say the news of Al Pineada’s transition (or promotion, I like to call it) left me saddened and somewhat bewildered…I share this because I have a foreboding sense, that has become a growing realization, that we are losing what Tom Broker once labeled “The Greatest Generation”…this generation of hard-working people, who won wars, didn’t do a lot of griping or complaining….some have labeled the “silent generation.” So, we understand, with sober contemplation, this world, this community, this family has lost a great man. And it should bring us sorrow and grief, it should give us pause and concern…Al was definitely part of that “silent generation” or what has been labeled “The Greatest Generation” that knew that action is greater than words..that wasn’t entitled, that was hard-working, faithful, dependable, and courageous. That was the Al I came to know and deeply respect.
I was glad I was able to be present when he was awarded “Layman of the year” and even took a photo with him when he received the “Bishop’s Award” at our last Session of Annual Conference.
He truly served as a “role model” to me and other younger staff to walk softly, but carry a “big stick” of hardwork and leadership excellence. Al, you were one of the great ones!
It was perhaps providential that my GPS routed me through the beautiful agricultural fields as a short cut to this church. In those fields were many farmworkers laboring so faithfully that allows all of us to enjoy fresh produce. As I drove through these lush vegetation fields, it was not lost on me that Al Pineda was the vision and driving force behind a wonderful statue here in Santa Paula that honors farm workers (see picture of monument below). It is certain that Al’s image and memory will always be an uplifting “statue” of honor inspiring all of us to a life of faithful and loving service.
