On Saturday, April 26, 2025, laity from across the South District gathered at Hope United Methodist Church in San Diego for a Spirit-led “Lunch and Learn” focused on Certified Lay Ministry (CLM) and Lay Servant Ministry (LSM). Rooted in fellowship, worship, and discipleship, the gathering affirmed God’s call on the lives of laypeople to lead, serve, and proclaim the Gospel within their communities.
Hosted by Michael Mitchell, South District Lay Leader, the day began with prayer and hospitality, followed by a powerful message from Rev. Luis Garcia, South District Superintendent, titled “Why Lay Ministry Matters: A Vision for Empowerment.” His words reminded everyone that the work of ministry is not limited to clergy, but is the shared responsibility of all who follow Christ.
Attendees were blessed by heartfelt testimonies from Melissa Basch and Susan Jeffries, who spoke about their journeys in lay ministry and how saying “yes” to God’s call has transformed their lives and their churches.
Participants then engaged in focused ministry tracks:
- Lay Servant Ministry, led by Melissa Basch, offered guidance on how laity can serve faithfully in worship, teaching, and congregational leadership—reflecting Christ in everyday ministry.
- Certified Lay Ministry, led by Cathy Wilson with testimony by Susan Jeffries, walked participants through the steps of becoming a CLM and the deeper spiritual formation required to shepherd others with humility and grace.
Throughout the day, there was a strong sense of the Holy Spirit’s presence—guiding conversations, building relationships, and affirming that laypeople have a vital and God-ordained role in the life of the Church. As one attendee shared, “This was a holy moment. I felt God speak directly to me through the stories and teachings today.”
We celebrate how God continues to raise up leaders among the laity, equipping them to share the love of Christ in the church and the world.
