Call for Support After Hurricane Lala

Dear beloveds in the California-Pacific Conference,

Earlier this week, Hurricane Lala moved past the Hawaiian Islands, leaving damage in its path. Hawaii Island is currently reporting the most damage, including our church, Na’alehu UMC, at Southpoint. The church and surrounding area experienced flooding, and many lost their homes and businesses.

I was in Hawaii over the weekend to attend the memorial services of one of our pastors and was able to return home safely, but that is not the case for many Hawaiian people who have experienced devastation due to this storm. Please join me in prayers of thanksgiving for those who were able to remain safe and dry, and prayers of comfort for those who experienced loss.

The California-Pacific Conference is thankful that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has already pledged a $10,000 emergency grant to those most in need after the hurricane. These funds go toward gift cards, emergency food, and water. Our disaster response teams have already been on the ground, setting up supply stations in Naalehu and Pahala. But needs continue to emerge, and additional funds will be needed. $10,000 is just a start towards recovery, and we need your donations to help.

There are some reports that power will be out for several weeks, so in addition to emergency supplies like food and water, your donation will also support emerging needs such as purchasing generators. Your donations support short- and long-term recovery efforts in Hawaii so that we can help our neighbors when they need it most.

You can donate today at www.calpacumc.org/donate. Look for the Hawaii Flood Relief Fund. Thank you for your generosity and your continued prayers for our community.

Grace y paz,

Bishop Dottie Escobedo-Frank
