SUMMARY:God of the Bible Small Group Study
DESCRIPTION:How shall we speak of God? What language shall we use? What words will invite\, embrace\, nurture\, and strengthen people\, loved by God? The Bible overflows with images of God. We have our favorites and love them well. For even the most seasoned reader of the Bible\, there are images in the Bible unexplored. \nIn this study we will look at the Biblical and Traditional ways of speaking about and understanding God so that our speaking of God can overflow with the richness of Biblical imagery and the expansiveness of Christ’s embrace. God is big\, beautiful\, beyond our imagining. \nRegister Here\nLed by Cal-Pac Commission on the Status and Role of Women\nWhen: Every Wednesday in July (July 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 29) from 7pm-8pm\nWhere: Zoom \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Sacred Vigil for Justice at Adelanto Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the California-Pacific Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church Immigration Task Force\, standing in solidarity with detained individuals\, honoring lives lost\, and calling for accountability and justice.\n\nAs part of our journey to Annual Conference 2026 in the desert\, we will make a sacred stop at another place in the desert: the Adelanto Detention Center.\n\nThere\, we gather for a vigil of prayer\, remembrance\, and advocacy. We come to offer our presence and accompaniment to the nearly 2\,000 individuals currently detained under inhumane conditions\, many living in uncertainty\, isolation\, and fear.\n\nWe gather to remember and honor the lives lost—the three who have died within these walls in recent months\, in years past\, and the 46 individuals who have lost their lives while in immigration custody or detention. We also remember by name those whose stories call us to deeper accountability\, including Rene Goode and Alex Pretti. Their lives are not forgotten.\n\nWe stop because faith compels us to bear witness and resistance. We stop to lament the suffering that has taken place\, to stand in accompaniment with those detained and their families\, and to raise our collective voice in advocacy\, demanding accountability\, justice\, humane treatment\, and systemic change.\n\nIn this sacred act of  public witness\, we declare that every person is worthy of dignity\, compassion\, and care. We refuse to look away. We stop to remember\, to accompany\, to speak truth\, and to call for an end to detention practices and systems that dehumanize our immigrant siblings.\nClergy are encouraged to wear stoles.

SUMMARY:Orientation To Ministry - May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Registration Cost: Registration is FREE.  This event is sponsored by the Board of Ordained Ministry. \nRegistration Deadline: May 21\, 2026 \nLocation:  Zoom Online. \nRegister Here\nThe Orientation to Ministry provides a space for those who are discerning a call to leadership within or through the United Methodist Church to learn about the distinctions between ordination\, licensing\, and certification for ministry\, as well as to meet others who are also beginning this journey in our Conference.  This is a requirement for certification and a Local Pastor license as well as Provisional Membership (2020/2024 Book of Discipline\, ¶312) \nYou only need to attend one Orientation to Ministry. \nYou can expect to share in a time of devotion\, meet other candidates for ministry and key members of BOM\, learn more about “calling” and how to identify your unique call within a United Methodist framework\, as well. \nIf you’re just getting started\, we’ll help you identify what steps to take first in your process. \n2020/2024 Book of Discipline ¶312:\nOrientation to Ministry—An orientation to ministry is required for all candidates for licensed and ordained ministry. Attendance at the orientation and becoming a certified candidate may be sequential or concurrent. This common ministry preparation experience is for the purpose of building collegiality and understanding among the varieties of set-apart ministry (deacons\,\nelders\, local pastors). 1. The orientation shall be held in each annual conference and is the responsibility of the conference Board of Ordained Ministry. 2. Collegiality in ministry and commonalities and distinctions among the categories of ministry (deacon\, elder\, local pastor) will be emphasized to facilitate understanding and appreciation of the gifts contributed through team ministry\, and the practice of set-apart ministry within the United Methodist connection will be articulated. 3. Guidelines will be made available from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. \nRegister Here\nQuestions please contact:\nRev. Brian Belting\, Board of Ordained Ministry Vocational Discernment Coordinator (vdc@bom.calpacumc.org) or\nCathy Wilson\, Associate Director of Lay and Clergy Credentialing and Development (cwilson@calpacumc.org).

SUMMARY:Innovation Discernment Academy
DESCRIPTION:Monday & Tuesday\, April 27-28\, 2026 (see schedule below) \nFaith UMC of Torrance\, 2115 W 182nd St\, Torrance CA 90504-4303 \nRegister Here\nCost & Deadlines: Register each member of your team separately by Monday\, April 20\, 2026 and pay the $25/person fee by Monday\, April 20\, 2026. Classes are open to participants from all districts. Hotel stays are not included in registration. Please make your reservations by Monday\, April 6\, 2026 \nAbout the Class: \n\nOur facilitator will be Rev. Rachel Gilmore\, Director of New Faith & Vital Faith Communities in the Desert Southwest Conference. Rev. Rachel Gilmore brings years of experience as a practitioner\, trainer\, and conference staff person mobilizing innovative ministries in various settings with a diverse group of individuals and teams.\nHave you ever wondered if you could start something to reach new people in new ways?  What kinds of gifts do we need to be able to innovate for good?  How has God uniquely gifted you\, as clergy or laity\, for such a time as this? The Discernment Academy will help you recognize how God has been forming you\, in this time\, among these people\, for the sake of the world — and then respond faithfully\, together.\nImportant note about advance preparation and pre-gathering assignments: Participants will be asked to do some pre-work assessments before the event\, and they will debrief their assessments before or after the event with our facilitator. When we gather for the Discernment Academy\, participants will be invited to slow down and reflect on who God is forming them to be and to listen to their life to find patterns that can help them plan for the future. There will also be an emphasis on the team they need around them in order to start new things\, because we are called to curate new things in the context of beloved community. We will be sending the pre-gathering assignments to participants after you register.\nTeams: Churches are encouraged to bring a team of participants. However\, each person should register and the fee applies per person. While teams are encouraged\, there are no team rates. The Congregational Vitality EMT has subsidized the cost for all already.\nRequirement for CV EMT Grant Funding: This Innovation Discernment Academy is a requirement for those who are interested in applying for a Congregational Vitality EMT Innovation Grant. The IDA (Innovation Discernment Academy) is the second step in the overall process of discernment and training provided by the CV EMT to prepare individuals and church teams to apply for and launch a new ministry. For further details about this process\, please refer to the CV EMT website\, https://calpacumc.org/ministries/connectional-ministries/vitality/\, or contact Rev. Sione Finau\, nmchair@calpacumc.org\, or Rev. Ken Suhr\, ksuhr@calpacumc.org.\nSchedule: Highlights from schedule is as below. Please plan to participate in the entire event.\n\nMonday\, April 27th:  10:00 AM – 4:45 PM. Lunch included.\nTuesday\, April 28th:  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.\n\n\nHotel Information: Hotel reservations can be made at the Sonesta Select Los Angeles Torrance South Bay. Click here for the direct link to reserve. Please make your reservations by Monday\, April 6\, 2026. While participants are expected to pay for their own lodging\, the CV EMT is providing reimbursement scholarships.
