SUMMARY:Innovation Discernment Academy
DESCRIPTION:Friday & Saturday\, August 21-22\, 2026  \nRegister Now at This Link\nFriday & Saturday\, August 21-22\, Fri (10am- 5pm) and Sat (9am-12pm)\nAldersgate UMC in Tustin\, 1201 Irvine Blvd\, Tustin \nCost & Deadlines: The registration fee is $25. Register each member of your team separately by August 10\, 2026 and pay the $25/person fee before August 21st. \n\nHotel stays are not included in registration. Please make your reservations by July 22\, 2026 (see below for hotel link).\nClasses are open to participants from all districts. \n\nAbout the Class: \n\nOur facilitator will be Rev. Rachel Gilmore\, Director of New Faith & Vital Faith Communities in the Desert Southwest Conference. Rev. Rachel Gilmore brings years of experience as a practitioner\, trainer\, and conference staff person mobilizing innovative ministries in various settings with a diverse group of individuals and teams.\nHave you ever wondered if you could start something to reach new people in new ways?  What kinds of gifts do we need to be able to innovate for good?  How has God uniquely gifted you\, as clergy or laity\, for such a time as this? The Discernment Academy will help you recognize how God has been forming you\, in this time\, among these people\, for the sake of the world — and then respond faithfully\, together.\nImportant note about advance preparation and pre-gathering assignments: Participants will be asked to do some pre-work assessments before the event\, and they will debrief their assessments before or after the event with our facilitator. When we gather for the Discernment Academy\, participants will be invited to slow down and reflect on who God is forming them to be and to listen to their life to find patterns that can help them plan for the future. There will also be an emphasis on the team they need around them in order to start new things\, because we are called to curate new things in the context of beloved community. We will be sending the pre-gathering assignments to participants after you register.\nTeams: Churches are encouraged to bring a team of participants. However\, each person should register and the fee applies per person. While teams are encouraged\, there are no team rates. The Congregational Vitality EMT has subsidized the cost for all already.\nRequirement for CV EMT Grant Funding: This Innovation Discernment Academy is a requirement for those who are interested in applying for a Congregational Vitality EMT Innovation Grant. The IDA (Innovation Discernment Academy) is the second step in the overall process of discernment and training provided by the CV EMT to prepare individuals and church teams to apply for and launch a new ministry. For further details about this process\, please refer to the CV EMT website\, https://calpacumc.org/ministries/connectional-ministries/vitality/\, or contact Rev. Sione Finau\, nmchair@calpacumc.org\, or Rev. Ken Suhr\, ksuhr@calpacumc.org.\nSchedule: Highlights from schedule is as below. Please plan to participate in the entire event.\n\nFriday\, August 21st:  10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Lunch Included.\nSaturday\, August 22nd:  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.\n\n\nHotel Information: You are responsible for your own reservations. The class size will max at 30 participants and registration will close if that number is reached before the registration deadline. \nAbout the Course: \nInstructor: Deborah Bass \n \nDeborah E. Bass Faith-Based Leader | Advocate for Elder Care | Trainer & Facilitator Deborah E. Bass is a committed faith leader and advocate\, currently serving as Chairperson of National Black Methodists for Church Renewal\,(BMCR) and Chairperson of the Cal-Pac Conference Committee on Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century. She is also a seasoned trainer and facilitator for the Office of Community Developers of the General Board of Global Ministries. A lifelong United Methodist and a third-generation member of the Church\, Ms. Bass returned to her hometown of Compton\, California in 2015 after 30 years of service in New York City with the General Board of Global Ministries. During her tenure there\, she held key leadership positions\, including Associate General Secretary for Community and Institutional Ministries and Deputy General Secretary for Administration. In 2008\, she founded Bass Eldercare Resources\, a mission-driven business helping seniors and their families navigate the complexities of aging and senior care. Certified in Gerontology Advocacy\, she offered free educational seminars through churches and community-based organizations\, with a focus on helping elders maintain independence and protect their assets. Currently the Lay Leader at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Compton\, Ms. Bass continues to blend her passion for ministry\, justice\, and eldercare through both local and national leadership roles. \nThe course uses a Wesleyan theological frame—connection—to help readers understand United Methodism’s polity and organization as the interrelationship of our beliefs\, mission\, and practice. The course is organized into four parts—United Methodist beliefs\, mission\, practice\, and organization. Polity and organization are primary embodiments of The United Methodist Church. Functional in nature\, these aspects of the denomination facilitate our mission to make disciples for the transformation of the world. This book connects denominational governance and organization to our beliefs as well as our mission. A clear understanding of our identity—as Methodists with Wesleyan roots in connection—and our purpose—to make disciples for the transformation of the world—can help students of United Methodism navigate this treacherous landscape as present and future leaders. \n\nProvide your own book: All participants will need a copy of The Method of Our Mission by Laceye Warner (Amazon\, Cokesbury\, Upper Room).\nClasses are open to participants from all districts\, and the class will be in an online format.\nAttendance is required at all sessions for credit and you must have your camera on to get credit for the course.  \nAbout Certified Lay Servant (CLS) and Certified Lay Speaker status: All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend as well as any lay member wanting continuing education. SUMMARY:Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course - UM Polity
DESCRIPTION:LAY SERVANT MINISTRIES ADVANCED COURSE – UM POLITY\nTuesdays\, September 29\, October 6\, 13\, 20 and 27\, 2026\, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM California (Pacific Time)\nTuesdays\, September 29\, October 6\, 13\, 20 and 27\, 2026\, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM Hawaii (Hawaii Time) \nRegister Here\nZoom Online Platform \nCost & Deadlines: $30.00 and you must provide your own book (see below). Please note the deadline to register is Sunday\, September 27\, 2026. The BASIC class and one Advanced Class is required to successfully apply for Certified Lay Servant status. If you have taken the Basic Lay Servant Class within the last three years\, taking this advanced class will qualify you as a Certified Lay Servant.  If you want to continue on to being a Certified Lay SPEAKER\, you will need to take the following advanced classes: Preaching\, Leading or Planning Worship\, Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts\, Leading Prayer\, United Methodist Heritage or History\, and United Methodist Polity. For more information about Lay Servant Ministries\, click here.\nTechnical requirements for Zoom participants: To participate in Zoom  meetings\, participants must have a reliable Internet connection\, and a  laptop\, tablet\, or smartphone device that can download and install the  Zoom app. A web or phone camera and a microphone are highly recommended\,  although some users may call in via phone if a mic is not available. Zoom information will be sent to you later by the instructor. \n\nRegister Here\nFor more information about this course\, contact Cathy Wilson at cwilson@calpacumc.org.
