Open Invitation to Camp Colby Deconsecration
Members and friends of the Cal-Pac Conference, especially any and everyone touched by the ministry of Camp Colby, is invited to a Ritual of Deconsecration at the Camp, 2pm Saturday, March 21, 2026. The gathering is hosted by the Conference Council on Camp and Retreat Ministries.
All are invited to arrive by 2pm and explore the historic grounds of the Camp, then gather in the Dining Hall at 2:30pm for the ceremony. This will of course include singing Camp songs, sharing of stories, and a final celebration of communion. The liturgy closes with prayers releasing the property and buildings to others “for honorable use”.
The deconsecration is scheduled in light of the sale of the property, a difficult decision reached by the Annual Conference after years of consideration. Changes in connectional ministries, including camping ministries, combined with the effects of damages and losses following the 2011 Station Fire and other natural causes led to the decision that stewardship of the historic Camp would be better served by new owners. Proceeds of the sale will be shared with the Conference’s Native American Caucus and invested in camping and retreat ministries across the Annual Conference.
Colby campers know the road to Camp has always been bumpy, so participants are encouraged to car-pool. Passenger vans are also scheduled to shuttle people to and from the event: for this service, please contact Kenny Funk –kfunk@calpacumc.org by March 14th . Light refreshments will be available on-site; all campers and guests are welcome.
