The role of the Music Director is to develop and strengthen the BHUMC music ministry, encouraging the congregation to enter into corporate and personal worship to the glory of God.
Primary Responsibilities and Tasks of the Music Director
1. Plan, schedule, coordinate, and lead the music for worship services at the direction and
supervision of the Senior Pastor. Select special music for worship services appropriate to
the worship themes and seasons. Consult with the Senior Pastor on themes, congregational
singing, and special music.
2. Be present at all Sunday worship services (PTO is arranged directly with the Pastor).
Worship support includes special services and programs, including but not limited to:
Christmas, Easter, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday.
3. Assist in planning and/or leading worship for special events outside of regular worship
services.
4. Be responsible for worship readiness of all equipment associated with worship and music,
including the sound system should a sound technician not be available.
5. Be present and ready for worship a minimum of 30 minutes before service/call times.
6. Work with the Senior Pastor and BHUMC Worship Team to plan the music ministry of the
church.
7. Meet weekly with the Senior Pastor to review past services and plan for future services.
8. Direct the weekly planning activities and rehearsals necessary to accomplish worship in all
services.
9. Seek out, lift up and prepare the musical talents and skills present in the church community.
Such efforts might include, but not limited to, developing a group of instrumentalists or
vocalists/choirs; soloists, et al. Preparation work could include ongoing weekly practices in
our dedicated choir room, etc.
10. Provide other musicians with chord charts or sheet music, instruction of playing and singing
technique and song arranging.
11. Responsible for hiring guest musicians and other worship artists within the church budget
allocation and at the direction of the Senior Pastor and SPRC.
12. Discover and introduce new songs and prepare or obtain sheet music and/or charts for
each. All music is to be purchased within the church budget allocation, duly licensed and no
copies will be made without the permission of the publisher or author.
13. Maintain tuning and service of all instruments, including organ and pianos throughout the
church within the church budget allocation. Coordinate with the accompanist on what is
needed for the pianos and organ in the Choir Room and Sanctuary.
14. Purchase music and related supplies within church budget allocation. Administer and care
for the music library, instruments, and other materials as needed.
15. Maintain the music library, instruments, and license agreements, including all required
reporting.
16. Coordinate and cooperate with the pastoral staff as well as the office staff and volunteer
resources.
17. The Music Director will act as the immediate Supervisor over music staff and contracted
musicians.
18. Seek out and attend continuing education in worship music practices through personal
research, seminars and/or conferences, and attending other church services or watching
recordings online.
19. Perform other related tasks as may be requested from time to time.
Qualifications, Strengths & Skillset
1. Ability and knowledge to coordinate and lead Christian Worship in the Methodist Tradition
that engages and inspires the congregation to grow spiritually.
2. Knowledge and appreciation for various traditional and contemporary worship forms and
styles.
3. Experience in directing volunteer musical ensembles. The ability to identify, recruit, equip
and motivate volunteers in a variety of music ministries, and balance that with proper
oversight and direction. Ensure that musicians develop a community with each other and
are given the opportunity to use their gifts to serve the congregation.
4. A passion for worship and a humble, team-oriented heart.
5. Skilled instrumentalist (any instrument) and quality vocalist.
6. Ability to read music and transcribe melody and charts.
7. Knowledgeable or willing to learn in sound, lighting, and audio and video recording.
8. Knowledgeable or willing to learn online and offline tools and technology for worship
planning and presentation such as Proclaim, PowerPoint, Zoom, streaming software, video
and audio recording software.
9. Education in music at the collegiate level preferred (degree in music ministry helpful).
Equivalent experience considered.
10. Effective communicator both oral and written.
11. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
12. Position requires standing for prolonged periods, bending, twisting, and extended use of voice and breath.

Salary or Pay Range
$30-$32 hourly
