Purpose

The director of community engagement is responsible for cultivating meaningful relationships between the church and the surrounding community. The director works with the community organizations and the Mission and Social Action committee in developing resources for mission and service, including hospitality and justice. The director serves as both a spiritual leader and a strategic connector in helping the church to have a transformative presence in our community.

Reporting

The Director of Community Engagement is to report directly to the Lead Pastor for day-to-day operations, the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) for fulfilling responsibilities defined in the job description, defining goals, evaluating, and communicating concerns related to the performance of the position.

Community Engagement Responsibilities (75%)

  1. Provide leadership to the Garden worship service and Garden outreach events.
  2. Work with the Garden worship leader in service planning and coordination.
  3. Work alongside the Mission and Social Action Committee to develop an ongoing plan for ministry with our community partners.
  4. Ensure that potential new members are contacted regarding their involvement in the congregation, matching gifts with opportunities for service and fellowship.
  5. Build and maintain strategic partnerships with local nonprofits, schools, and civic organizations.
  6. Coordinate, equip, and recruit volunteers to provide hospitality to new attenders/visitors.
  7. Give leadership to areas of mission, social justice, and compassionate ministries.
  8. Manage and provide oversight to budgets, calendar, and resources related to outreach events.
  9. Provide pastoral duties, including leading worship and preaching on occasion in the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services, and participating in general pastoral duties such as visitation and pastoral care.
  10. Attend and participate in church council meetings (administrative council, Small Group, Mission and Social action, and Care ministries).
  11. Skills in the areas of fundraising and grant writing are a plus but not required.

 

Oversight to Family Ministry (25%)

  1. Give oversight to Sunday school by coordinating and recruiting adult volunteers to serve in children’s and youth ministry, including the nursery staff.
  2. Give leadership to the Youth and Children’s Ministry Council by planning events and coordinating activities with the lay leadership.
  3. Communicate and publish all activities through newsletters, bulletins, the church calendar, and social media as needed. Coordinate these with the Church administrator. Work with the teachers, youth, and Family Ministry Council to plan special events such as the annual Easter egg hunt, Vacation Bible School, and Trunk or Treat.
  4. Implement and coordinate ministry programs with families using Safe Sanctuary principles and guidelines.
  5. Develop and participate in youth activities and events.

 

Qualifications

The Director of Community Engagement plays a major role in the development of new and creative ministry at SDUMC. SDUMC seeks a person who has a solid understanding of the Christian faith and inclusion, and who has a strong desire to connect with the unchurched in the community. We seek a creative, energetic, and passionate leader who values the team concept of ministry and is willing to learn and grow in this new adventure.

  • A Master of Divinity degree.
  • At least one to three years of ministry experience.
  • Spiritual maturity, high moral and ethical conduct.
  • Experience partnering with social service agencies in the community.
  • A heart for reaching people in the community, particularly those who are unchurched.
  • A collaborative leader and team member who can lead the Garden worship experience.
  • Good organizational, teaching, administration, and computer/technology skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A growing and vital relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Ability to recruit, train, organize, and motivate leaders.
  • Shares the vision, philosophy of ministry, and commitments of SDUMC.
  • Experience in fundraising or grant writing is a plus but not required.

 

Working Conditions
The position requires flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. The actual number of hours required during any given week is those needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. It is recognized that the schedule may vary at different times of the year. Expectation is that the Director will work on Sundays, as well as other specific times as agreed upon by the Lead Pastor and SPRC.
It is expected that the chosen candidate will:

  •  Keep the church office and the Lead Pastor informed as to how they may be contacted.
  • Notify the Pastors, Church Administrator, and SPRC Liaison before any unforeseen absence from regularly scheduled hours, events, or duties, and provide a suitable substitute in case of anticipated absence.
  • Adhere to hours and schedule discussed and agreed upon with the Lead Pastor and Staff/Parish Relations Committee.
  • Seek approval for continuing education from the Staff/Parish Relations Committee and the Lead Pastor
  • Participate in opportunities for periodic review and goal setting.
  • Participate in annual performance and pay level reviews.
  • Contact SPRC members with any concerns that should arise.

 

Terms of Employment

  • A criminal background and Safe Sanctuary background check is required.
  • References–Professional and Personal.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Probationary period will be 90 days.
  • Salary dependent on salary and relevant experience. The range is between $70,000-80,000.
