This September, learn about mission work in Hong Kong at your church! Deaconess Prim, a United Methodist missionary serving migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong through the Mission for Migrant Workers, is home in the Cal-Pac Conference this month. She is eager to share how faith in action is transforming lives through “building community, finding ways to support each other and living our faith in action.”
Deaconess Prim is a member of West LA UMC and first served in Cal-Pac in the Mission Intern Program, a forerunner to Global Mission Fellows. At the Filipino Migrant Center in Long Beach, she says, “When I let myself learn about the migrant communities and share my own reflections,” she said, “the more I was feeling at home and realizing that I was called to do this as my vocation.” After her mission internship, she provided direct services and advocacy to address human rights issues in California and beyond. She also served on the conference Justice and Compassion EMT and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines.
Joy is now based at the Mission for Migrant Workers at St. John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong, SAR (special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China). In Hong Kong, SAR, migrant workers remain one of the most vulnerable groups, left out of many social protections. Joy serves as the Welfare Case Officer, supporting outreach and welfare programs. The Mission provides case support, rights-based information, crisis intervention services, work skills trainings, serving nearly 24,000 migrants in 2025. They also work towards a more inclusive Hong Kong, building positive employer and worker relationships, and other social advocacy through their outreach posts, walk-in center, and online services.
She was welcomed into the order of Deaconess and Home Missioner in 2020 and consecrated as a deaconess in May 2022. For more information or to contact her to visit your congregation, visit her website.
