UMCOR Disaster Response Training

newsUMCOR Early Response Teams (ERTs) fill a specific need in the early days after a disaster to clean out flood-damaged homes, remove debris, place tarps on homes, and otherwise help to prevent further damage, while providing a caring Christian presence. ERTs are not a first-response group of emergency workers, nor are they recovery, rebuild, or repair teams. Under very specific guidelines, ERTs assist survivors, without causing further harm or being a burden to the affected community. UMCOR ERT’s belong to the national Volunteer Organizations Assisting in Disasters (VOAD). VOAD is a recognized agency which integrates at both national (FEMA) and local government levels (e.g. San Diego County Office of Emergency Services).  For more information, click here.

The Cal-Pac Annual Conference has organized disaster response teams and in the last two years and have responded to New York, New Jersey and Maryland in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, helped with the floods in Colorado, tornado response in Oklahoma and have been recently invited to Long Island and Michigan due to flooding from last month. While the needs have been greater and more frequent in the mid-West, Southeast and East Coast, the recent southern California wildfires highlighted the need to have local resources able to respond to disasters
