United Methodist Africa Forum Condemnation of Attack on United Methodist Church Delegation in Nigeria

Subject: Condemnation of Attack on United Methodist Church Delegation in Nigeria

The United Methodist Africa Forum, West Africa Desk strongly condemns the March 25, 2025 attack on a delegation from the United Methodist Church (UMC) by members of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) during their visit to meet with members of the Central Conference of Nigeria. The delegation was ambushed by members of the GMC carrying machetes, sticks and stones. They shattered the windshield of one of the four cars in the convoy carrying 12 passengers.

This incident represents not only a violation of the fundamental principles of respect and dialogue within the Methodist tradition but also a troubling escalation of tensions within our community that undermines the spirit of love and reconciliation.

The UMC delegation which included Bishop Samuel J Quire Jr, Bishop James B. Caulker and his wife, two Americans, other internationals from around Africa and a lot of Nigeriand were on a mission of unity and support, seeking to foster understanding and provide solidarity to fellow United Methodists in Nigeria. Instead of engaging constructively, the actions taken by members of the GMC have created an atmosphere of fear and division, contradicting the very essence of our faith, which calls for compassion, respect, and open communion among all believers.

As a community, we are deeply saddened by the events that unfolded. Violence and aggression do not reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ, nor do they uphold the values of our Methodist heritage. Our mission is to build bridges, not barriers, and to promote peace in every corner of the world we are present.

The Annual Conferences in the West Africa Central Conference overwhelmingly voted in favour of Regionalization which is angering the GMC folks who reject Regionalization in the UMC but accepts it in the GMC (section II paragraph 609 GMC Book of Doctrine and Discipline).
We urge the leaders of GMC to stop funding carnage in Africa through the Africa Now Initiative. Stop buying guns and Machetes to fuel the violence. Stop putting brothers against brothers, and children against parents.

We urge leaders from both the Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church to denounce these acts and work diligently towards healing the rifts that have developed. Hostility has no place in our work of faith, understanding must replace anger. We call upon our members and leaders to reaffirm their commitments to listen to one another and to prioritize peaceful coexistence rooted in love over those fueled by division.

Additionally, we extend our support and prayers to the UMC delegation and the members in Nigeria affected by this attack. Their courage in the face of such adversity is commendable and inspiring. It is our hope that healing and reconciliation can be achieved through continued dialogue and shared mission.

Let the GMC leaders call Bishop Ande Emmanuel, make an appointment and apologize for the attack on peaceful people today and make a pledge that it will not and must not happen again.
We stand firmly on the side of justice and peace, advocating for a Methodist movement characterized by unity in Christ rather than division. Now more than ever, we must gather together as a global community of faith, committed to a common vision of love, respect, and understanding.

We must all be aware that in everything we do in God’s vineyard should represent Jesus Christ on earth. Will violence, defamation and malice represent Jesus Christ on Earth, off course. Will action touch the lost souls for redemption. Let’s emulate Chris in all we do.

We want to thank the Nigerian State Security for their professionalism in protecting and saving our lives. Their sacrifice speaks volume.
