In September, we shared an urgent call for clergy assistance for funding and donations for asylum seekers arriving in our area. Over the past months and years, your Justice and Compassion EMT has been hard at work, partnering with churches, clergy, and interfaith organizations to provide essential support to asylum seekers from all over. Whether they’re crossing our southern border or arriving via bus from other states like Texas, your contributions have made a tangible impact.
Asylum Seekers Ministry Update from Cal-Pac UMC on Vimeo.
Here’s a quick update on the incredible work we’ve been doing together:
- Providing Essentials: From housing and food to backpacks and more, we’ve been able to ensure that asylum seekers have the basic necessities they need to get through their first few days.
- Building Partnerships: By collaborating with local organizations and faith communities, we’ve been able to extend our reach and provide even more comprehensive support.
But our work is far from over. There’s still so much more we can do to support those in need. Here’s how your church can continue to make a difference:
- Prayer: Keep those affected by the asylum process in your thoughts and prayers.
- Donations: Whether through monetary donations, toiletry kits, backpacks with supplies, or even welcome postcards makes a world of difference.
- Temporary Housing: With just a few beds and some food, your church can provide one or two nights’ rest and be the first safe space asylum seekers experience on this side of the border.
- Translation Assistance: Native or fluent Spanish speakers are consistently needed for a couple of hours at a time to help welcome our guests.
- Transportation Assistance: Providing transportation from border towns or local shelter locations to the airport for guests to get to their sponsor’s location.
- Stay Engaged: Keep an eye out for future updates and opportunities to get involved. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact on the lives of asylum seekers.
